Telehealth and urgent care can both provide timely care, but they are not interchangeable. Telehealth works best when a provider can reasonably evaluate the concern through history and video without immediate hands-on testing. Urgent care is generally more appropriate when a physical examination, on-site testing, imaging, EKG, wound care, or another procedure may be necessary.
A virtual visit may be a convenient option for selected cold symptoms, allergies, minor skin concerns, medication questions, follow-up visits, and other appropriate non-emergency issues. It can also help a patient determine whether an office visit is necessary. The final decision depends on the symptoms and the provider's clinical assessment.
In-person urgent care may be more appropriate for injuries, significant pain, dehydration, symptoms requiring laboratory testing, possible fractures, cuts that may need repair, or concerns where the provider needs to listen to the lungs, examine the abdomen, or perform other hands-on assessment.
