What Is Paxlovid?

Paxlovid is the brand name for nirmatrelvir with ritonavir, an oral antiviral prescription medicine. The FDA's Paxlovid information describes it as an approved treatment for mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in certain adults who are at high risk for progression to severe disease. It is not appropriate for every patient, which is why a clinician should review your medical history, kidney and liver considerations, and current medications.

Who May Be Considered for COVID-19 Antiviral Treatment?

A clinician may consider factors such as age, immune status, chronic medical conditions, vaccination history, symptom severity, how long symptoms have been present, and the likelihood of progression to severe illness. Eligibility is individualized; having COVID-19 does not automatically mean Paxlovid is indicated.

Medication Interactions Are Important

Ritonavir can interact with a number of prescription and nonprescription medicines. Do not stop, start, or change medications on your own to obtain antiviral treatment. Bring or provide an accurate medication list so the treating clinician can evaluate interactions and determine whether Paxlovid or another approach is appropriate.

Can Urgent Care Evaluate COVID-19?

Yes, many non-emergency COVID-19 concerns can be evaluated through EZMED Urgent Care. Could Telehealth Be an Option?

Some patients with mild, stable symptoms may be appropriate for an initial telehealth visit. A virtual provider can review symptoms, medical history and medications and determine whether in-person examination or testing is needed. Telehealth is not appropriate for emergencies or for symptoms that require immediate hands-on evaluation.

When to Seek Emergency Care

Call 911 or seek emergency medical care for severe or life-threatening symptoms, including significant difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, new confusion, inability to stay awake, or other symptoms that appear dangerous or are rapidly worsening.
