Dizziness vs. Vertigo: What's the Difference?

DIZZINESS OR ROOM SPINNING?

At EZMED Primary & Urgent Care, we evaluate patients experiencing dizziness, vertigo, balance problems, and lightheadedness to determine the underlying cause and provide effective treatment.

What Is Dizziness?

Dizziness is a broad term used to describe several sensations, including:

  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Feeling faint or like you may pass out
  • Feeling off balance
  • Feeling weak or unsteady

Dizziness itself is not a disease—it's a symptom that can be caused by many different medical conditions.

Common causes of dizziness include:

  • Dehydration
  • Low blood sugar
  • Low blood pressure
  • Viral illnesses
  • Medication side effects
  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Heart conditions
  • Anemia

Because there are many possible causes, it's important to be evaluated if your symptoms are severe, frequent, or persistent.

What Is Vertigo?

Vertigo is a specific type of dizziness. It creates the false sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving, even when you're standing still.

People with vertigo often describe feeling like:

  • The room is spinning
  • The floor is moving
  • They're being pulled to one side
  • They lose their balance when walking

Vertigo is usually caused by a problem involving the inner ear or, less commonly, the brain.

Common Causes of Vertigo

The most common causes include:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become displaced, causing brief episodes of spinning with certain head movements.
  • Vestibular neuritis – inflammation of the balance nerve, often following a viral infection.
  • Labyrinthitis – inflammation of the inner ear that may cause both vertigo and hearing changes.
  • Ménière's disease – an inner ear disorder that can cause vertigo, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hearing loss, and ear fullness.

Dizziness vs. Vertigo: Key Differences

Dizziness Vertigo
Feeling lightheaded or faint Feeling like the room is spinning
May feel weak or unsteady Creates a false sense of motion
Many possible causes Usually caused by an inner ear disorder
May occur with dehydration, low blood sugar, or illness Often triggered by head movement
Not always associated with balance problems Frequently causes nausea, vomiting, and difficulty walking

When Should You Seek Medical Care?

You should visit EZMED if you experience:

  • Recurrent dizziness
  • New episodes of vertigo
  • Difficulty walking because of dizziness
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Symptoms lasting longer than a few minutes or occurring repeatedly

Our providers can perform a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend the appropriate treatment.

When Is It an Emergency?

Call 911 or seek emergency medical attention immediately if dizziness or vertigo occurs with:

  • Sudden weakness or numbness
  • Trouble speaking
  • Vision changes
  • Severe headache
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Facial drooping

These symptoms could indicate a stroke or another serious medical emergency.
