Abscess: Causes, Symptoms, and When to Visit Urgent Care

At EZMed Urgent Care, we evaluate and treat abscesses quickly to prevent complications and relieve pain.

What Causes an Abscess?

An abscess forms when bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin or a blocked hair follicle. The immune system responds by sending white blood cells, leading to inflammation and pus buildup.

Common causes include:

  • Ingrown hairs

  • Cuts, insect bites, or skin trauma

  • Blocked sweat or oil glands

  • Poor circulation or weakened immune system

  • Staph infections, including MRSA

Abscesses are not caused by poor hygiene alone, and they can happen to anyone.

Common Symptoms of an Abscess

Abscess symptoms often worsen over time and may include:

  • A red, swollen, tender lump

  • Warmth over the affected area

  • Increasing pain or pressure

  • Pus or drainage

  • Fever or chills (in more serious infections)

If the area is growing, extremely painful, or not improving, medical evaluation is important.

Should You Pop an Abscess at Home?

No. Attempting to pop or drain an abscess at home can:

  • Push infection deeper into the skin

  • Spread bacteria to surrounding tissue

  • Increase the risk of scarring

  • Lead to serious complications, including bloodstream infection

Abscesses should be drained sterilely by a medical professional when indicated.

Abscess Treatment at EZMed Urgent Care

Treatment depends on the size, location, and severity of the abscess.

At EZMed Urgent Care, we may:

  • Perform incision and drainage (I&D) when needed

  • Prescribe antibiotics if there are signs of spreading infection

  • Provide wound care instructions to promote healing

  • Evaluate for MRSA or recurrent abscesses

  • Offer follow-up guidance to prevent recurrence

Most abscesses can be safely treated in an urgent care setting without a hospital visit.

When to Go to Urgent Care for an Abscess

You should seek care if:

  • The abscess is painful, enlarging, or not improving

  • There is fever, chills, or spreading redness

  • The abscess is on the face, groin, or near the spine

  • You have diabetes or a weakened immune system

  • The abscess keeps coming back

Early treatment leads to faster healing and fewer complications.

Preventing Future Abscesses

While not all abscesses are preventable, you can lower your risk by:

  • Keeping cuts and scrapes clean and covered

  • Avoiding shaving over irritated skin

  • Not sharing towels, razors, or personal items

  • Washing hands regularly

  • Seeking care early for suspicious skin infections
