What are pre-op physicals?

Pre-op physicals happen shortly before a planned surgery. The purpose of a pre-op physical is to make sure you’re healthy enough for the surgery. Surgeons require a pre-op physical before all major surgeries and some minor ones, too. 

When should I have my pre-op physical?

Your surgeon specifies when you should have your pre-op physical. They’re usually scheduled in the month prior to surgery. 

At EZMED Primary & Urgent Care, the team understands that life gets busy sometimes, so they don’t require you to schedule your pre-op physical. 

You can come in for the physical with no appointment required, whenever it’s convenient for you, as long as it’s within your surgeon’s recommended time frame. What does a pre-op physical include?

Pre–op physicals typically include a few main things. 

• Medical history review
• Physical exam
• Complete blood count (CBC)
• Liver lab test
• Kidney lab test
• Blood sugar test
• Electrocardiogram (EKG), which checks electrical activity in the heart

Depending on your surgeon’s requests and the type of surgery you’re having, you may also need other tests like a urine test to detect pregnancy.

Are pre-op physicals expensive?

Pre-op physicals are very reasonable at EZMED Primary & Urgent Care. The team bills your insurance for pre-op physicals in most cases. They also welcome self-pay patients and offer extremely reasonable prices for pre-op physicals — lower than most providers in the area. 

Do I need to do anything special to prepare for a pre-op physical?

Preparation depends on what tests your surgeon requested. But in most cases, you can eat and drink normally before your pre-op physical. For certain types of tests, you may need to fast beforehand. 

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes, and bring along a list of your current medications. If you’ve recently visited the emergency room or have seen another urgent care provider, ask that facility to forward the information to EZMED Primary & Urgent Care.
